American MMS Gertrude joined the Society in 1950 and obtained a Bsc in nursing from the University of San Francisco. She subsequently worked in schools of nursing run by MMS in Bangladesh and Jordan going for her first home leave in 1964. She spent a year in our novitiate in South Shields and then returned to Jordan for three years. From there she went to Pakistan, working in Rawalpindi. She came back to England in 1974 to qualify for international nursing education at the Royal College of Nursing in London and stayed in this country for three years before returning to Pakistan to Mirpurkhas. From 1983 to 1994 she was taking care of her elderly parents in Wisconsin but at the same time carrying out home care for patients and doing parish work. She returned to Mirpurkhas for three years but then returned to the US because of illness. Recently she has been working in a programme for women recovering from drug addiction and is now helping to care for MMS aged 80 to mid-nineties in Philadelphia. Gertrude has been visiting us in London during July with a side trip to The Netherlands to renew acquaintance with many old friends and places.
