Sister Josephine Brannigan comes from South Shields in North East England. She qualified as a nurse in Newcastle on Tyne in 1954. After working in New York for four years to gain experience, she returned to England where, attracted by the spiritual values and energetic common sense of the Medical Mission Sisters, she entered their Noviciate in South Shields . Following 3 years of religious training, Josephine was sent as part of an international group of Medical Mission Sisters to open a new hospital in Amman , Jordan in 1961.
In 1970, Josephine was transferred to Holy Family Hospital , Karachi , Pakistan , returning to England to study Midwifery in Newcastle on Tyne in 1971. On completing this course, she was assigned to Osterley, London , where she was elected District Co-ordinator until 1980. Josephine then returned to Pakistan working at St Teresa’s Hospital in Mirpukhas, Sindh.
In 1988 Josephine returned to England , working first in a home for women with learning difficulties and then with the Sisters of Mercy in establishing a residential home for the frail elderly in Hexham, Northumberland. In 2004, Josephine was elected District Co-ordinator and moved to the District House in London where she is engaged in administrative work.
